The Conjuring Power of Words

Words can cast or break spells.

This is what I am attempting to re-member, to gather up in my bones and corpuscles and voice, on and off the page, so that I might bring something(s) of substance into the world or undo damage that’s been done. I long to be in touch with what lives within, behind and beyond language, that invisible place that heals, brings meaning, and tells the stories needed in these times.

I’ve accepted that this is my true vocation. It’s what I am called to do.

We are in a time when words get twisted, spun, turned upside down and used to convey untruths. True to our word seems to be something of the past.

How often do we pause and measure our words before responding?

One look in the comments section of any social media platform these days tells me it’s not very often. And by measure, I don’t mean withhold or hesitate, I mean render with precision and purpose.

It seems to me there is an over abundance of words, many of the same familiar, buzzy, often righteous ones, strewn about us that ring hollow and empty. Words, that while different, are often easily interchanged for one another like, freedom, truth, sovereignty, impact, power or heart, soul, spirit or growth, change, transformation, breakthrough, just to…
